G. Romani: an
introduction
I was born in Italy, am a mother-tongue Italian speaker, and have
lived most of my life, and still live, in Italy.
After completing my classical studies at high school, I graduated
with a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from
"Politecnico di Milano" Technical University forty years
ago, specialising in Fluid Machinery Design and Construction.
My professional
experience
My professional experience of over thirty years turned rapidly to
computer science: in Italy and the United States I worked with a
leading manufacturer of data processing systems, and my experience
has been enriched by repeated periods of work in various European
countries.
For years I was involved in the development of software (mainly data management and data
communication systems) to support
computerised manufacturing systems in complex multinational
environments.
For some years then I carried out systems engineering activities on
large telecommunication and data management systems in industrial
settings, coordinating the development, conversion and optimisation
of installations.
I have been for long time interested in introducing new
methods for designing applications and information systems, and was
drawn into projects aimed at modernising and changing the
professional contents in various industrial settings, with
ventures in the field of training professionals and managers as
well.
Finally, for fifteen years I dedicated myself to technical and
business consultancy with regard to information systems in the
financial, banking and insurance industry at various levels of
responsibility.
The result
I was forced by the specific sequence of the assignments to refine
my research and investigative abilities and my curiosity for
technology matters in new and diverse fields. My basic technical
training and high school classical studies have been a great help:
not least the habit of good writing, which is indispensable for
presenting convincing technical argumentation in complex
negotiations.
Years spent working in the United States, frequent travel, meetings,
international seminars in various European countries, the constant
contact with materials in English, the constant necessity of editing
documents, both in Italian and English, intended for skilled
speakers, have steered my experience towards a growing attention to
the Italian and English languages, and their powers of expression.
Freelance translator
I have dedicated the last six years, at my retirement age, to
translating mainly technical documents, from English to Italian,
directly for customers and for translation agencies. A good client
of mine is Language
Translation Service, a translation agency for which I
have done a lot of work, especially checking terminology in
technical translations to and from English.
